Neighborhood
North Loop neighborhood makes the northern part of the loop that encircles Minneapolis' downtown. The neighborhood has grown quickly in the last few years, as industrial buildings and old warehouses were converted for residential and commercial uses. This transformation was followed by new residential construction. The North Loop, which used to be industrial land, is now a vibrant residential neighborhood, very conveniently located near downtown Minneapolis.
History
The R. Herschel Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1893. It its day, Herschel manufactured and distributed a wide variety of equipment, some of which are still in use today and others that have disappeared into history. From mower knives, hose, belting, and wheelbarrows to more exotic-sounding things like reaper sickles, single/double-trees, and neck yokes, Herschel made or carried it.
Headquartered in East Peoria, Illinois, the company had domestic agencies in New York, Minneapolis (now Herschel Lofts, naturally), Omaha, Kansas City, Wilmington and Lansing, and international agencies at Odessa, Russia; Sydney, Australia; Paris, France; Berlin, Germany, and London, England.
The Man
In 1892 Martin Sehm emigrated to Peoria, IL from Germany and started working at the R. Herschel Manufacturing Company, then a "...struggling enterprise in its infancy."
Apparently Mr. Sehm was "...young, intensely energetic and possessed a remarkable capacity for work, and diligently applied himself to the development of the enterprise." With Mr. Sehm at the helm, Herschel Manufacturing expanded rapidly and was eventually trumpeted as "...one of the stable and highly prosperous industries of East Peoria."
Many a man would like history to render them like Mr. Sehm: "He prospered in his undertakings through intelligent and capable application of his inherent ability and the conservation and expenditure of his forces to meet the increasing demands of his business."
